436. When did you last get a haircut?

It had been more than a decade since he'd been in the military, but he still got a trim every couple of weeks. Maybe his current style wasn't the most modern, and he tended to gel it into place more often than not, but he needed to make sure he didn't have any distractions when in a fight or when aiming a long-range firearm.

But a year ago he was anything but clean-cut, months worth of tangled, matted hair and beard obscuring his features. At that point in his life he didn't give a damn about appearances -- though even at his lowest he appreciated the anonymity looking like a possibly crazy, drunk bum afforded him. A large percentage of the general populace didn't really want to think about the homeless, so even when they saw him, they didn't really see him.

Until that day on the subway, with Anton and his little gang of thugs.

In hindsight, Carter was probably right -- taking them down so easily really had drawn a lot of attention. But he'd been a little bit extra feral -- or something -- that day, and hadn't been willing to put up with thugs who would take advantage of people who looked like him -- people who couldn't defend themselves the way he could. Maybe that extra edge of craziness was why he'd taken that next step and given her his prints so readily.

But once he got back to his crap-hole of a room, he knew it was time for the hair and beard to go; time for his appearance to change as drastically as possible. (And that little extra feral edge just might have decided it was time to help the people his prints would draw in find him faster...)

By the time he finished cutting his hair and beard and took the razor to whatever straggling bits were left, it looked like someone had sheared a sheep in the room.

And after what followed and the changes it brought to his life, that was the last time he let it grow longer than needing those periodic trims.
